It stinks because a hybrid hot hatch is exactly what I'm looking for in my next car.

Word on the street here in DC is that VW is reeeeeel serious about electrification. Make of that what you will.

Nice to see it has some decent electric range this time. The old one was only like 14 miles. I’d be interested in this too, but oh well, there’s still the GTI and it’s not exactly a gas guzzler

It would make sense for VWoA to bring it over here.
So....
We won’t get it.

If the GTE is anywhere close to being as efficient as the e-Golf that thing should easily get 50 miles on a charge. That would be awesome to bring over here.

Honestly...I could actually see this making it to the US. Why? Because VW can market it as exactly what it is, the plug-in hybrid of the GTI family.
If VW is gonna focus on the GTI family and R models with this new Golf in the US, as well as their push towards electrification, the GTE Plug-In would be a good fit, to be honest.
That, and they’d be able to rub a more fun to drive PHV in Toyota’s face. while also giving the Elantra GT N-Line, Civic Si, and Subaru WRX something to be envious about. Probably not so much the Veloster N or WRX STI.
Fingers crossed.

I’m thinking the only shot is if it qualifies for the federal tax incentive. Otherwise we won’t get it (just like we don’t get the current GTE). I’m still puzzled why the US not only got the A3 e-tron, but got it exclusively as a 5-door hatchback unavailable with any other powertrain. ???

This is exactly the sort of drivetrain I have been suggesting for an affordable sports car as well.
I don’t need a practical little crate on wheels, I would want something sexy and fun to drive on weekends, or make short errand runs on electric power only, but then take on road trips on rare occaision.
Golf GTE 5-door, and Bluesport mid-engined sports car with the same drivetrain, perhaps...
13KwH for a 30-ish mile full-speed electric range, then hybrid drive with a combined output sport mode, is a great option for people who still live in places with abundant gas stations, but extremely few electric charging stations along many miles of rural roads and highways.

Yeah, it's almost the perfect all arounder. I think they'd sell really well being an affordable performance hybrid.

Yeah, that’s always puzzled me too. The only theory I’ve heard that made any sense is that the A3 hatchback was also supposed to be a TDI as well but then diesel gate happened.
I wonder how well those e-trons hold up used. They're extremely reasonable in price with not a lot of miles.
